The Strauss Capelle Orchestra in Vienna is a prestigious ensemble originally established by Johann Strauss I in 1827. Of all the orchestras that play the Strauss repertoire, Capelle is the most traditional. They are easily recognized by their distinctive red uniforms. Legend has it the request came from the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I, whose court tailor was instructed to design special costumes for his favorite musical ensemble.
The Capelle is deeply rooted in historical traditions and is globally recognized for its excellence. The Strauss Dynasty, which includes Johann I and his sons Johann II, Eduard, and Josef, toured the world with their Strauss Capelle Vienna. They ushered in the second Golden Age of the Viennese Waltz and captivated international audiences with their stunning performances of contemporary masterpieces (and Johann II’s unforgettable new melodies).
Resurrecting the Strauss dynasty
In 1901, after a concert tour across Canada and the USA, Eduard Strauss I, son of Johann Strauss I, disbanded the orchestra in New York. It was only 76 years later that members of the Vienna State Opera and Volksoper orchestra decided to resurrect the Strauss dynasty’s original orchestra. With unwavering commitment to their musical heritage, these musicians revived Strauss’ music in its original context.
The revival of the Strauss orchestra allowed the Strauss family’s most enchanting melodies to once again fill concert halls worldwide. Today, the orchestra continues its founder’s tradition of performing Strauss’ music on tour to the highest standard, delighting audiences around the globe.
At the time of writing this, the orchestra had concert dates in Vienna and Bulgaria but also a number in China.
